Reconnecting With My Birth Story – The Meaningful Dragon

I thank my mom for making Mid-Autumn Festival an extra special day for me. A day she wasn’t worried about how heavily pregnant she was to go out and celebrate the wonderful festival with her loving husband and her little princess right inside her tummy. A day she wasn’t worried about the troubles that may cause her if I decided to see the world on that day. All she wanted was to show me her love by taking me on an adventure to enjoy the spirits of the festival.

The curiosity of seeing what she saw on that day has been haunting me for a long time, but I never take the time to go out and enjoy the spirits of it until this year.

I was trying to keep my expectation as low as possible, but the beautiful lights from Chinese wreath kept me thinking what would happen as I explored.

Drum rolling perked up an exciting ambiance while keeping me awake from dreaming too much. Performers all started to entertain us by holding festive lanterns one by one.

Fire Dragon Dance finally began after much anticipation. The smoke from the Dragon permeated the place while a thousand of people cheered the performance. Photographers ran up and down to capture the perfect moment. The place became much more chaotic than usual, but nothing could stop me from connecting with the Dragon. The Dragon that I saw as my mom – a powerful woman who lights up my life with laughter, love and kindness…whose Chinese horoscope happened to be a powerful Dragon as well…

The dance was short but memorable. People might forget it after some time, but the feelings of it kept growing on me.

The smell of the smoke, the image of the dragon and the noise of cheering never seemed to fade away until I saw chains of festive lights shining in the darkness. A moment reminded me of the magic of the Universe. There are billions of people in the world, but I was long destined to be the daughter of my loving parents.

Exploring the place with how proud I was to be their daughter made my adventure truly special. I didn’t know if it was coincidence. The place was somehow decorated with a traditional theme to make me feel as if I traveled back in time when I was still rolling inside my mom’s tummy. Neon signboards with some names that could only be seen back in the day and lanterns designed in a traditional way were presented in front of me all at once. Such a scene added a delighting note to my beautiful memories.

I thought the delighting scene already wrapped up my night beautifully, but a joyous moment came in suddenly when I saw lion dance lanterns. It was colorful and moving that seemed to celebrate my birth.

It was also a moment when I seemed to see my mom smiling and crying happily. Holding a fragile little me gently in her arms without forgetting to act as a powerful dragon to protect me from day 1 until now.

*Post note: You all know I already shared my birthday post here on WordPress. Mid-Autumn Festival is actually my lunar birthday. Although I rarely celebrate it, I think it would be amazing to dedicate this post to my parents especially my mom.

    Hello Faburlife!
It was really beautiful to know so much about your culture and more than that I also got a sense of values that have come to you from your parents. I have tremendous respect for them for bringing you up to be such a cultured girl. And, that I say – because I am only beginning to know you through your eyes, vide the pictures that you share and the blogs
you write. Getting to know you is Indeed a privilege.
And there’s something so real about you, something I am unable to put into words. There’s visible genuinity that you can feel, which is so rare to find, that you are a gem dosent need a mention but I have learnt one must never waste an opportunity to express delight, affection and gratitude.
    Cheers!

  3. This is such a beautiful post ~ a tribute to your mother (who must be so proud of you) and also shows the magic of the Mid-Autumn Festival. This festival is the first Chinese festival I ever celebrated, and someone told me about the moon (and the Jade Rabbit) and mostly that my family half a world away were looking at the same moon so I could feel connected to them. The importance of family on this festival made a big impression on me.

So it is poetic to read your words and see your photos, and I can understand why it is so important to you, because the first one you experienced was within your Mom on this great day 🙂 A great description, “her little princess right inside her tummy…” What a great day it must have been for you both ~ and for you to relive it this year. You’re photographs of this event are great ~ showing the enthusiasm and spirit of the night, and I most enjoyed the 7th photo, the colors and mood is excellent. This is the one thing about HK I really admire, the genuine happiness and festivities of such celebrations are such a sight to see. This year I got to experience through your photos. So beautiful. Gosh, I didn’t even get to eat a moon cake this year 🙂 Did you?

    1. Thank you very much for your kind words! 🙂 I hope she is proud of me! 😉 (I still haven’t translated it in Cantonese yet and she has no idea what I’m talking about here lol 😀 ). I better not to be so lazy and start translating 😛 . It’s good to know it is the first Chinese festival you ever celebrated. Yea, I used to hear the story about the moon when I was a kid but I actually forgot the story lol :D. Glad you reminded me the Jade Rabbit! haha cool I did the same when I was studying overseas. Looking at the moon and thought my family was sharing this special day with me at that time!

Yes, truly a special day for both of us!!! ❤ I still don't know how my mum managed to do it. Although I wasn't expected to be born on that day, she was seriously heavy pregnant at that time. It isn't easy to deal with the crowd when you are heavily pregnant. I guess love made her to do so for me and that made me appreciate her ever more. The 7th photo is one of my fav as well since I like the mood and colors as much as you do. Yes, I couldn't agree more with you. HK always knows how to spice up festivities of such celebrations. Even though I don't like to go anywhere crowded, I somehow manage to push myself to go just to enjoy the spirits of it. 🙂 I must say I'm not a big fan of moon cakes, but I did have one for the festival 😛

      1. That would be a very good idea – have an English blog and then one in Chinese 🙂 That way your family could see what a great writer/storyteller you are… The story of the Jade Rabbit really captured my attention, and so did the moon-cakes, as I loved them (the ones I were given back then in Xi’an and they came from Guangdong and were double-yolk cakes…amazingly good). Yes, I agree it is a very special day & holiday, especially for you as it also represents your birthday 🙂

      2. I don’t think I will have a Chinese blog (not really good at typing Chinese, sometimes even run out of Chinese words). What a shame!😆 I guess I will simply tell my mom what the whole story is in Cantonese. Hahaha don’t know if they think I am a great writer/storyteller 😂. The Jade Rabbit story definitely great. Interesting to know you actually like moon cakes! You probably have Chinese roots in the past life lol😆 Thanks to my mom for making Mid-Autumn Festival a special day for me! (or actually I couldn’t wait any longer and I had to come out to see how festival it was😂😉)
